Let me share here how to cook Black Eyed Peas fast Recipe Indian style. I am using dried black-eyed beans so first, we have to see;
How do I cook black eyed beans?
There are different ways to cook.
- The easiest is to use a pressure cooker but if you do not have it then wash the dried beans couple of times. Then add the beans to a large pot. I am using one cup of black-eyed beans so I poured 5 cups of water and covered the beans completely with water. I placed the pot on high heat and let it boil for few minutes 3-4. Then I turned off the flame, covered the pot and let it stand at room temperature for 1 and ½ hour to 2 hours. Then I drain and replaced the water with fresh water and then boiled on low heat for almost 20 minutes. Cooking time depends on the size of the beans. The bends were tender and then I continued with the rest.
- You can also soak in cold water overnight, then drain water and cook in fresh water; it will take 12-20 minutes.
- If you are using a pressure cooker than cook for 7-10 minutes depending open height from sea level and external temperature. See the notes.
Ingredients How to Cook Black Eyed Peas Fast:
- 1 medium-sized finely chopped onion
- 2 medium sized chopped tomatoes
- 1 cup tender black eyed beans (lobia/sukhi chawli)
- 3 cups Broth of the beans
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 leveled teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- ½ teaspoon coriander powder
- ¼ teaspoon cumin powder (optional)
- Pinch of mustard seeds (optional)
- Green coriander to garnish
- Red chili to garnish
- 4 garlic cloves finely chopped
- ½ tablespoon lemon juice
- 5 tablespoon oil for frying
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ tablespoon garam masala powder
- You can use green chilies, mint leaves, julienned ginger to garnish.
Directions How to Cook Black Eyed Peas Fast:
Let us start the recipe.
- Heat up oil in a kadai or wok over medium-high flame, add mustard seeds and let it crackle add chopped green chili and then garlic paste, sauté for few seconds until the garlic is aromatic.
- Remove the garlic mixture from the wok on a plate and set aside.
- In the remaining oil add onions and stir and cook until caramelized. Add chopped tomatoes and then the seasoning like salt and red chili powder or black pepper that you prefer. I have only used black pepper powder as my kids cannot heat hot food.
- Stir and cook until the tomatoes dissolve and are mushy and oil will shine on top and will be separated.
- Add boiled black eyed beans, stir and cook for about 4 minutes or until you can see the traces of oil in the gravy.
- Pour broth of beans and little more water 3-5 cups in all depending on how much liquid you desire or how much you want soup in the curry. Let the water boil and then reduce the flame to low, cover the wok with a lid. More water can be added if required.
- After five minutes remove the lid and add garam masala powder (all spice powder), lemon juice and sugar. Add the garlic mixture that you have removed in a plate, give it a quick mix.
- Cover with a lid and let it simmer until you get desired amount of soup or consistency of the curry.
- Switch off the flame then garnish black eyed beans recipe with Chopped coriander leaves.
